Mochis partnerships prove potent as the end of Mexican mango season arrives!
The arrival of Los Mochis Keitt mangoes marks the bittersweet end of Mexico’s mango season, offering us a few more weeks to enjoy the sweet fruit from this fruit fly-free zone. Despite Mexico’s severe drought this season, the region’s cooperative conditions are expected to extend the season past mid-September. Thanks to our strong partnerships with Empaque Macapul and Empaque Don Juan, we’re navigating this final stretch with the same quality and strength that define the Crespo Organic brand.
Los Mochis is the only region in Mexico where the Crespo Organic brand partners with external packhouses. While El Grupo Crespo excels with proprietary packhouses in Chiapas, Oaxaca, and the flagship & Mexico’s largest hydro thermic mango packhouse, Empaque Don Jorge in Southern Sinaloa, our strength also lies in selecting strong partners—something we’ve successfully achieved in Mochis.
The Mochis Region
Located about 200-250 miles north of Rosario, Los Mochis is a fruit fly-free zone, meaning no hot water treatments are required for importing fruits into the USA. This region, once focused on sugar production, has seen a significant increase in mango farming, with a few dedicated farmers contributing to our organic mango family.
Mochis Partnerships
El Grupo Crespo relies on two key organic partnerships in the Mochis region, built on hard work, cooperation, and a commitment to supporting growing communities. Both partners provide state-of-the-art cooling systems and advanced packing technology, ensuring the quality of our mangoes even in the region’s intense heat. These partnerships also allow us to continue to offer the myriad of packaged mango options until the end of the season: Net-Bags, Crespo Big Boxes and A Case for Consumers (part of our big-box programs) as well as some specialty mangoes.
Empaque Macapul,
El Grupo Crespo and the Crespo family has been collaborating with Empaque Macapul for over 15 years with mangoes as well as other commodities. They are both growers and packers, and one of the first of only a handful of certified organic packinghouses in the region. In addition to the services they offer with mangoes, they offer packing services for other fruits and vegetables grown in the region. With over 50 hectares of mango production they supply us with Ataulfo, Kent, and Keitt mangoes, as well as specialty varieties like Mallika and Nam Doc Mai. Their packing capacity is about four truckloads per day, helping us meet demand right up to the end of the season. You can see the entire mango packing process at Empaque Macapul on their Facebook Page.
Empaque Don Juan
Don Juan started as mango growers and evolved into a powerful grower/packer they are today. They packed their product at Macapul for the first years and then eventually built their own packing facility four years ago, a packing facility which offers packing services to many other growers and brands. Production wise they boast over 300 hectares of mango orchards. The facilities are basically new and modern and clean and spacious with substantial cooling space.
Don Juan currently does not have a website or social media presence (we will try and help change that!) so for now we can offer a little slider of photos (below) so you can see the impressive place yourself!
How & When It Ends?
That is the big question for us always on the organic side. We typically end the season as soon as any quality defects appear due to weather issues. We will keep our eyes on the weather closely and try and choose the sweetest spot for the happiest ending. Our partners in Mochis report good conditions, ample good quality fruit with sizes between 6-10cnt.
